Woot woot mma!
MMA has actually been around since ancient Greece. Back then, it was called Pankration. It was introduced in the Olympic Games in 648 BC. Pankration means “a complete contest”. It involved both boxing and wrestling. Pankration was also used by Greek Hoplites (single units of an ancient Greek army called the Phalanx) in battle and in their training. The term ‘sudden death’ actually came from Pankration. In the event of a tie, each contestant gets a ‘free blow’ to his opponent. This stops until one gives up or dies – hence the term ‘sudden death’.
I’m sure that if you’re a fan of mma, that you’ve had this discussion or conversation with someone you know at least once or twice. Is MMA really too dangerous and should it be legalized? If you’re an mma fan, the answer is obvious. It should be legalized, because it is a valid sport and it is in fact safer than boxing or other more popular fighting sports out there. Yes there are more dangerous weapons to use against your opponent in the ring/ octagon, but it is still safer than boxing. Here’s why: in boxing, you are continuously bombarded with punches to the head. There have been more deaths in boxing while there is not even a handful in the whole history of mma. Yes it has only been around for a short period of time, but the record still stands. More at http://www.squidoo.com/mmamississauga
The most modern version of Jeet Kune Do or Pankration would have to be the UFC or the Ultimate Fighting Challenge. In its early days, UFC pitted different arts against each other, without weight categories, and with only a few illegal moves: no biting, eye gouging, or fish hooking. There may be a few more rules I’m forgetting but it was pretty much everything goes. Everyone quickly found out that the old ways of martial arts did not work in this type of environment. Training in mma changed drastically within the next few years.
